They built a bypass round the bypass, Its a new way we can go,
It takes you past most everywhere, but nowhere you would know
and when we're going nowhere, it's the road we like to use
cos the bypass round the bypass is in the nightly news

It's the newest road to drive on, it runs right through our state
just say your going on it, everyone knows you'll be late
It's closed off every weekend but it's still the place to be
and although I'm going nowhere there's no other road for me

It's getting on for six lanes wide but we use only one
to use another lane we're told would spoil all the fun
and just when we get up some speed there's holes to slow us down
but it's the bypass round the bypass and it gets us out of town

The road signs were confusing so they took most of them down
and the ones that are remaining, I swear they move around
There's cars to the horizon, as far as I can see
but it's the bypass round the bypass so it's the only one for me

So when I'm going nowhere and I've got no place to be
and the traffic jam on main street's just not doin it for me
I get on to the bypass and I sit for hours on end
cos that bypass round the bypass is where I see my friends

They built a bypass round the bypass it appeared the other day
miles and miles of green grass turned into earth and clay
cos we'd rather look at asphalt and concrete by the ton
and when it gets too busy we'll just build another one

They built a bypass round the bypass now we can't get in or out
it seemed a simple plan but now we're starting to have doubt
